In Colloto, just outside Oviedo, on an unassuming street next to an industrial estate, is a llagar you can take all your friends to. All of them. And all their friends. And their friends friends. It is a sight to behold. Ample private parking is the first sign that you might be up for an unusual experience. Then you realize the building is three full floors. This is not your average quaint llagar you think.
Then you go inside and the walk from the front door to the bar is almost as long as the walk between terminals in Barajas. Upon reaching the bar, you realize it alone is longer than your house. Then it hits you. The scattering of patrons you assumed was just a few is more like fifty or sixty.
Upstairs is a hall for espichas that can hold 400 people. See below for the literally dozens of menus they offer for such celebrations. Downstairs is the bodega, the distribution point for the cider made at the other facility, actual location only hinted at, somewhere in Villaviciosa.
History
Sidra Herminio began its journey in 1943 when Herminio Alonso Buznego founded the brand and started up the first facilities in Colloto. In 1949, the activity was transferred to the site that is currently occupied by Lagar Herminio S.L. Since then and until today, the growth and good work of a family saga of lagareros has been constant, keeping tradition together with renewal. The second generation of lagareros, Herminio and José Luis Alonso Ojeda, undertook in 1996 an ambitious project to renovate and expand the facilities, both in the cider house-restaurant and in the llagar. That year the capacity was considerably expanded, providing it in turn with new and modernized facilities. The capacity of the cider house-restaurant is also increased by raising one more floor, creating its own parking lot and renovating all its facilities.
