Pote (cooking pot)

From Eating Asturias, the Encyclopedia of Asturian Gastronomy

Pote, in addition to being the short form of the name of Pote Asturiano, is the name in Asturian for the Spanish olla. That is to say; a ceramic jar, usually unglazed, used to cook soups or stews. Also used as a storage pot for water or dry goods. Similar in shape, size, and usage to the American beanpot.

In Antiquity

The Roman aulla (later olla) was used not just as a cooking and storage pot, but also as funerary vessel. That use aside, olla was a generic word for a cooking pot, such as would be used for vegetables, porridge, pulse and such.[1]

In Spain

The use of the word olla continues unchanged from the original Latin meaning in Spain.
